On 31 March 2011 the ferry between Hung Hom and Central stopped running. The Transport Department had invited tenders twice and received none, so it let the licence lapse and pointed passengers to cross-harbour bus route 115. The crossing returned on 28 June 2020 under Fortune Ferry, which won a new tender, with a first sailing from Hung Hom at 7.30am charging adults HK$9. That 07:30 still opens the Monday-to-Saturday list; the adult single is HK$10.70.
Boats link the western berth of Central Pier No. 8 with Hung Hom (South) Ferry Pier, and the two official sources disagree slightly on the time it takes: about 16 minutes for the Transport Department, around 18 for Fortune. From Monday to Saturday the last boats leave Hung Hom at 19:00 and Central at 19:20, and the list has a gap around lunch and another in mid-afternoon.
Sundays and public holidays have their own list, starting with the 08:10 from Hung Hom and the 08:30 from Central. The afternoon is more even on those days, since the 15:20 from Central and the 15:40 from Hung Hom fill the weekday hole, but everything finishes earlier: the 18:20 from Hung Hom is the final boat in either direction.
HK$10.70 a ride, HK$290 for the month
The same single fare applies in both directions and on every day of the week. HK$5.30 is the concession for three groups: children from 3 to 11, seniors from 65, and disabled passengers. Fortune lets a child under 3 travel free with an adult as long as the child does not take a seat, and treats anyone 95 cm or taller as at least 3 unless a document shows otherwise.
Fortune's passenger rules expect you to tap Octopus or hand over the precise amount in coins and notes, with no change given and no refunds. The fare sheet it publishes also names WeChat Pay, Alipay, UnionPay QuickPass, PayMe and Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay cards; its FAQ does not, so if you mean to pay that way, ask at the gate first.

Pier 8's western berth and the South pier at Hung Hom
Two details decide whether you reach the right boat. In Central, the ferry uses the western berth of Pier 8. In Hung Hom, it uses the South pier; the North pier next to it on Wa Shun Street belongs to Sun Ferry's crossing to North Point, a different operator with its own fare and turnstiles. The Government describes the two together as Hung Hom Ferry Pier, so check the South sign before you queue.
Central Pier No. 8 (Western Berth)
Fortune uses the western side of Pier 8. Its pier sheet lists a waiting room with seats, vending machines, a nursing room and toilets, including an accessible one, all before the gate, plus a self-service point for collecting the Government's public transport fare subsidy.
Hung Hom (South) Ferry Pier
The South pier stands beside the Hung Luen Road bus and minibus interchange. Here the toilets and nursing room are on the far side of the gate, so use them after tapping in; the pier also has a subsidy collection point and a waiting room.
From the Central waterfront to Kowloon City District
The line runs from Central, in the Central and Western District, across the harbour to the Hung Hom waterfront in Kowloon City District, calling nowhere else on the way. The Transport Department puts the crossing at about 16 minutes, Fortune's FAQ at around 18, and neither publishes a distance.
Checks before the Pier 8 turnstile
- Octopus or the exact fare
Fortune gives no change and does not refund a paid fare. Other payment methods appear only on Fortune's fare sheet, so confirm them on the spot.
- Bags to 26 × 20 × 12 inches
Luggage within that size travels free. Anything larger is charged as freight, HK$20 per 0.1 cubic metre, paid at the ticket office first, and staff decide where it goes on board.
- Bikes at HK$14
Any size of bicycle, folding ones included, pays HK$14. Park it where the crew tells you.
- No animals on this route
Fortune does not accept pets on Central – Hung Hom. Guide dogs accompanying a blind or visually impaired passenger are the only exception.
- Wheelchair users: ring first
Fortune says the boarding aids at both piers are only for disabled passengers who can get out of a wheelchair. Call 5801 2200 before relying on step-free boarding.
- Signal No. 8
Fortune stops this route within two hours after the Observatory hoists Typhoon Signal No. 8, and the captain on duty has the final say on suspending or resuming. What you see above is the scheduled list; it says nothing about whether a given boat is sailing today.
How the crossing was lost and won back
The relaunch was tied to a wider plan. In December 2019 the Transport Department put Central – Hung Hom out to tender together with a new water taxi, citing public calls for more ferries inside the harbour. Two companies bid, Fortune Ferry was chosen and given a five-year licence, and before the first sailing it installed turnstiles, display panels, fans, seats, free Wi-Fi and luggage storage at both piers. The list now in use took effect on 3 September 2023.
Changes at the Hung Hom end were set out in October 2025, when the Government told the Legislative Council that the upper deck of the South pier could be let for shops and services, that toilets and barrier-free facilities were being upgraded, and that the neighbouring Hung Hom Urban Park had fully opened that July. For onward travel it named green minibus 13M from the Hung Luen Road interchange to MTR Hung Hom Station, and buses 115 and 115P from Whampoa Garden, about ten minutes' walk away.
Asked about the Central – Hung Hom crossing
Does Saturday follow the weekday timetable?
Yes. Fortune runs the Monday-to-Saturday list on Saturdays, so the 07:30 from Hung Hom sails. A Saturday that is a public holiday, such as 26 December 2026, takes the Sunday list instead.
What is the last boat from Central on a Sunday?
The 18:00 from Pier 8. Hung Hom has one more departure, at 18:20, which is the final sailing of the day.
Is there a sailing from Hung Hom at 15:40 on a Wednesday?
No. From Monday to Saturday the 15:00 is followed by the 16:20. The 15:40 runs only on Sundays and public holidays.
Can I bring my dog?
Only if it is a guide dog. Fortune does not carry other animals on this route; its North Point – Kwun Tong boats take pets on some sailings.
How does the monthly pass work?
It costs HK$290 and covers unlimited rides in the month printed on it. Register with the terminal staff. Fortune puts passes on sale on the 25th of each month, and holders still queue with everyone else.
What does a JoyYou Card holder pay?
Twenty per cent of the HK$10.70 adult fare, charged to the JoyYou Card. Paying cash, anyone 65 or older is charged the HK$5.30 concession instead.
Is this the same Hung Hom pier as the North Point ferry?
No. This ferry uses Hung Hom (South); the North Point boats use Hung Hom (North) on Wa Shun Street.
