Central – Mui Wo ferry: fast boats only, from Pier 6 by day and Pier 5 at 03:00

Since 1 April 2026 Sun Ferry has run nothing but fast ferries between Central and Mui Wo, on Lantau Island. They leave from the eastern berth of Pier 6, except the 03:00 night sailing, which boards at Pier 5.

On holidays too, the 03:00 from Central boards at Pier 5; after it, the next departure from Central is at 07:00.
Every departure listed is a fast ferry. Times are departures only; the operator does not print arrival times. The 00:30 from Central runs just after midnight and belongs to the evening of the day in the heading.

Is there still a cheaper slow boat to Mui Wo? Not since 1 April 2026, when the Transport Department upgraded every ordinary sailing on the route to a fast ferry. Each departure now takes about 35–40 minutes, and an adult pays HK$33.50 from Monday to Saturday or HK$48.50 on a Sunday or public holiday.

The timetable in use dates from 10 August 2026. That change re-timed the early-morning departures from Mui Wo and withdrew the Saturday 15:00 from Central and the 06:30 holiday sailing from Mui Wo. Apart from the 03:00 night boat, Central's day starts at 06:10 from Monday to Saturday and at 07:00 on Sundays and holidays, and ends with a 00:30 after midnight; from Mui Wo the last regular boat is at 23:30 on both kinds of day.

The Transport Department's list and Sun Ferry's web timetable and printed sheet match departure by departure.

One kind of boat, two day rates

With a single type of boat there is one adult price per kind of day: HK$33.50 from Monday to Saturday and HK$48.50 on Sundays and holidays. The concession of HK$16.70, or HK$24.20 on Sundays and holidays, covers children between three and eleven, passengers of 65 and above, and disabled passengers; there is no charge for a child below three who comes with an adult and has no seat of its own.

Lantau residents leaving the island on a holiday can buy a holiday return at Mui Wo for HK$57.20. Its leg to Central is valid only on the sailing it is bought for, and the trip back is fixed as a fast ferry, so visitors starting in Central simply buy two singles.

Under the Government's $2 Scheme, as changed on 3 April 2026, the discount on any adult fare above HK$10 is 80%, which covers both Mui Wo prices. It applies to JoyYou cardholders from 60 upwards and to disabled passengers whose Personalised Octopus is registered with that status. The discount is given only when paying by Octopus. Prices for the holiday return are taken from the Transport Department, as Sun Ferry's own table mentions the ticket only by name.

Mui Wo boats use the eastern berth of Pier 6 on Man Kwong Street. The one exception is the 03:00, which Sun Ferry boards at Pier 5, the Cheung Chau pier, so a night traveller should head there instead.

Points to settle before the Mui Wo boat

  • The 03:00 is at Pier 5

Whatever the day, the night departure from Central boards at Pier 5. In the other direction, Mui Wo's night departure is at 03:40.

  • Bikes on any sailing

Freight is accepted on all Mui Wo sailings; a bicycle costs HK$26.30, bought at the freight counter before you board. Sun Ferry checks size and space on each boat, and large loads must be booked with the operator.

  • Luggage allowance

On the Mui Wo route, one piece of luggage within 32 × 23 × 12 in. is carried free of the freight charge. The company's general rules speak of two per passenger, a point worth confirming at the pier.

  • Animals on board

Pets are registered and paid for at the pier before boarding. They must travel in a cage, carrier bag or pet pram, or on a lead with a muzzle, and keep to the area set aside on the fast ferry. The indicative charge Sun Ferry lists for this route is HK$25.00 an animal, with the final amount set at the pier.

  • No reservations

Tickets are sold for the next sailing only and seats are first come, first served. If a boat fills, the next departure is the fallback.

  • Bad weather

Tropical cyclone and rainstorm warnings can halt sailings at short notice. Sun Ferry takes enquiries on 2131 8181.

  • Accessibility

The sources checked do not confirm level boarding on every boat; ask Sun Ferry before you travel.

Onward boats from Mui Wo, and the holiday calendar

Mui Wo, in the Islands District, is one of the four calls of the Inter-islands ferry, which Sun Ferry also runs, together with Peng Chau, Chi Ma Wan and Cheung Chau; since 10 August 2026 the 06:00 from Mui Wo leaves out Chi Ma Wan. The company's other route from the Central waterfront, to Cheung Chau from Pier 5, still mixes ordinary and fast ferries and has three fare levels.

Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and Saturday 26 December are both general holidays, so the Mui Wo boats run to the Sunday list and charge HK$48.50 on each. New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday and the first days of the Lunar New Year on 6, 8 and 9 February.

Mui Wo ferry: what travellers ask

Why does the 03:00 not leave from Pier 6?

Sun Ferry's timetable states that this one departure boards at Central Pier 5. Every other Mui Wo sailing uses the eastern berth of Pier 6.

How late can I leave Mui Wo for Central?

The last regular boat is at 23:30, on weekdays and on Sundays alike. After that the next departure is the 03:40 night sailing.

Is the fare different on a public holiday?

Yes. An adult single is HK$48.50 on Sundays and public holidays, against HK$33.50 from Monday to Saturday.

Can I bring my bike to Lantau?

Yes, on any sailing. Buy a HK$26.30 freight ticket for it at the pier before boarding. Sun Ferry may refuse loads that do not fit the boat's freight area.

What does a child pay on a Sunday?

HK$24.20 from age 3 to 11, and nothing under three, as long as an adult accompanies them and they don't occupy a seat.

Do I need to book a seat?

No, and you cannot: tickets are sold only for the next sailing, and boarding is first come, first served.

Can I reach Cheung Chau from Mui Wo without going back to Central?

Yes, on Sun Ferry's Inter-islands boat, which links Mui Wo with Chi Ma Wan, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau. Its timetable is separate from this route's.
